All Wendelstein 7-X coils successfully tested
The last of the superconducting Wendelstein 7-X coils has successfully passed the cryogenic tests at CEA Saclay near Paris. The 50 non-planar and 20 planar coils of W7-X are the heart of the device and technically the most demanding components. The non-planar coils produce the helically-twisted magnetic field, responsible for the confinement of the plasma. For experimental flexibility, the radial plasma position and the helical twist of the magnetic field lines can be modified by the planar coils.
