Kwanghyun Cho is a Budget Reporting Officer for the Finance & Project Control Division. The mission of Finance & Project Control is to maintain the integrity of financial processes, adhere to project cost and schedule constraints, and serve all stakeholders including ITER Organization units, Domestic Agencies, and Members. As a Budget Reporting Officer, he develops and enhances financial reports and analysis tools for stakeholders. His work directly impacts the achievement of ITER project goals by aligning financial decisions with the approved budgets. Kwanghyun is also an elected member of the Staff Committee, whose purpose is to represent the professional interests of all staff, including on employment, safety and welfare, and to act as an intermediate body to facilitate communication between the ITER Organization Director-General and staff.

“My work is not just about science; it’s about shaping the future. Every calculation, every effort, and breakthrough bring us closer to unlocking the immense potential of fusion energy—a clean, abundant, and sustainable source that can power our planet for generations to come.”

Kwanghyun feels proud to contribute to such a monumental endeavour—one that transcends borders and unites nations in a shared vision. "ITER represents the pinnacle of human collaboration, where brilliant minds converge to build the world’s largest magnetic fusion device."

As a member of the Staff Committee, Kwanghyun's mission is not only about problem solving—it’s about fostering understanding across cultures, bridging gender gaps, and ensuring equitable benefits for all. In this regard, one of his biggest challenges at ITER is striking a balance between his role as budget officer and that of Staff Committee member. “Navigating the intricate tapestry of diversity at ITER presents both and opportunity and a challenge."

"While understanding financial status and limitations, I need to champion benefits for staff and empower voices from under-represented nations. It’s about nurturing a harmonious ecosystem where every staff member, regardless of origin, feels valued and empowered." To help him negotiate some of the challenges of his two roles, Kwanghyun leans especially on the respect and excellence elements of ITER’s CARE values (see Values and Competencies). "I believe my journey is one of resilience, where every step taken contributes to a more inclusive and vibrant ITER family.”

Living in the climate and environment of Provence, Kwanghyun has learned to love gardening. He loves celebrating the region’s climate and beauty through the garden he has created, and how it allows his children to connect with nature, engage in physical activity, express creativity, learn responsibility, and enjoy the rewards of harvesting homegrown produce.
