Under fog and autumn light

Due to its proximity to the Durance River and to the narrow gully spanned by the Bridge of Mirabeau, the area around ITER often experiences a peculiar meteorological phenomenon: whereas the rest of the countryside basks in bright sunlight, a thick fog settles on the approaches of the ITER worksite.

In this latest drone survey, many other things were captured: the monster crawler crane stationed at the side of the Tokamak Complex, ready to extend its 120-metre long boom to install the pillars of the future crane hall; the crisp details of the installation's buildings, outlined by the autumn light; and the ongoing works in and around the Tokamak Complex.
Once again, the ITER site is revealed in all its industrial beauty—a unique place for a unique purpose.
At the top of the Tokamak Building, contractors are adding pillars during the late evening/night shift, and consolidating them by adding cross bars during the day. A second round of pillars installed on top of the first will bring the metal structure to the height of the Assembly Hall roof. Travailler à ITER ne signifie pas nécessairement que l'on est aux premières loges du chantier. En septembre 2008, des navettes en bus sont organisées pour faire visiter le chantier au personnel d'ITER Organization et du tokamak Tore Supra voisin. Pour beaucoup d'entre eux, c'est la toute première occasion de voir le chantier de près.
Les bassins de refroidissement d'ITER recevront l'eau de refroidissement du Complexe tokamak, qui sera testée avant d'être rejetée dans la Durance. Au mois de mars 2009, les bassins sont soumis à des tests visant à détecter d'éventuelles fuites.
Le Management Advisory Committee (Comité consultatif pour le Management) a commandé une évaluation indépendante des ressources nécessaires à la construction d'ITER. La commission d'évaluation, dirigée par le Dr. Frank Briscoe, comprend deux représentants de chaque Membre d'ITER. La Commission Briscoe formulera des recommandations en matière d'économies potentielles et proposera une restructuration majeure des systèmes de gestion du projet.
Alors que les travaux de viabilisation du site sont terminés et que la construction des bâtiments n'a pas encore débuté, la plateforme ITER serait un terrain idéal pour faire du roller.
A la mi-janvier, la fosse d'isolation sismique revêt son manteau bleu d'hiver. La construction du Complexe tokamak démarrera en 2013.
En mai 2009, le personnel se regroupe au point précis où se dressera le futur tokamak ITER pour une photo historique prise depuis une grue. Plus de 400 personnes travaillent directement pour ITER Organization.
